Ligue 1 McDonald’s, Round 19, 25/01/2026
Lille OSC fell to their fifth consecutive defeat across all competitions as visitors RC Strasbourg Alsace tore to a 4-0 win.
Lille were looking for a response to their disappointing start to 2026, which has seen the club lose all four of their fixtures so far. A nadir felt like it was reached during the week when Les Dogues lost 2-1 to ten-man Celta de Vigo, and reports emerged that Bruno Génésio had offered to resign, something the club denied.
The game was fairly level until Lille’s defensive issues came to the fore in a disastrous minute. Out of the blue, Lille were rocked when Diego Moreira combined with Guela Doué down the wing. Doué released a cross to Joaquín Panichelli, who turned under pressure and fired home. Lille lost the ball shortly after kick-off, and Strasbourg punished them with liquid football, as Julio Enciso capped a passing move with a delicate chip over Berke Özer.
Strasbourg had chances to add to their lead, with Panichelli hitting the crossbar with a looping header from a Martial Godo cross coming closest. Lille had to push forward, and gaps were increasingly left for Strasbourg to strike in transition.
Lille would leave the field at half-time to boos from their home fans, and would arrive in the second half to much the same fanfare. There was far more purpose from Les Dogues, and Olivier Giroud was able to test Mike Penders when he flicked Tiago Santos’s cross goalwards, while Ngal’ayel Mukau had a golden opportunity from a corner, but he couldn’t get his shot on target.
Just as Lille looked to be applying sustained pressure and threatening to come back into the game, Strasbourg hit them on the break. Moreira whipped a venomous shot (or perhaps a cross if we’re being kind) that Martial Godo leapt towards and managed to turn in. It looked tight, but after a VAR check, the goal was given.
It was all too easy for Strasbourg as they sliced through the Lille defence like a hot knife through butter. Godo had his second after he played a one-two with Enciso, the Paraguayan international setting the former Fulham man up in front of goal for the tap-in. Lille would manage to secure a consolation goal from Matias Fernandez-Pardo in injury time, but it was
Berke Özer, 2
The goalkeeper has not always covered himself in glory at Lille. He can have brilliant nights, like when he saved three penalties in a row in the UEFA Europa League against AS Roma, but he can also have nights like tonight, where he seems to make mistake after mistake.
Romain Perraud, 4
Replaced by Calvin Verdonk in the 69th minute.
Chancel Mbemba, 2
There were calls from supporters for Mbemba to start today after the shoddy defensive performance in the midweek tie against Celta, but the former Olympique de Marseille man was really disappointing tonight. He was far too easily beaten and looked unsure of his positioning in the centre of the back three.
Aïssa Mandi, 3
Replaced by Thomas Meunier in the 69th minute.
Nathan Ngoy, 3
Tiago Santos, 4
Replaced by Soriba Diaoune in the 69th minute.
Matias Fernandez-Pardo, 4
Ayyoub Bouaddi, 4
Ngal’ayel Mukau, 4
Ethan Mbappé, 4
He provided the best attacking threat throughout the game for Lille, but it felt like he had forgotten his shooting boots. All his attempts at goal seemed to either be dragged wide or be hit with too much power, and would sail over the bar. Replaced by Marius Broholm in the 87th minute.
Olivier Giroud, 4
Replaced by Félix Correia in the 80th minute.
Mike Penders, 7
Ben Chilwell, 6
Ismaël Doukouré, 7
Mamadou Sarr, 6
Guela Doué, 7
He had a really impressive evening in both boxes. He kept Matias Fernandez-Pardo quiet throughout the game, and was vital in providing attacking thrust down the right playing a part in both of the first-half goals. Replaced by Rafael Luís in the 76th minute.
Samir El Mourabet, 7
Replaced by Abdoul Ouattara in the 61st minute.
Valentín Barco, 8
Martial Godo, 8
The former Fulham FC winger has shone since Gary O’Neil replaced Liam Rosenior as head coach. He proved to give the club an added bit of nous in attack, helping Le Racing to race ahead of their vulnerable hosts.
Julio Enciso, 8
Replaced by Sebastian Nanasi in the 76th minute.
Diego Moreira, 7
Replaced by Sam Amo-Ameyaw in the 76th minute.
Joaquín Panichelli, 8
The striker was a constant danger throughout the first half, scoring the opener and setting up Julio Enciso for Strasbourg’s second. He also probably should have gotten his second of the evening when he hit the crossbar. He looks to have refound his early-season swagger under Gary O’Neil. Replaced by Gessime Yassine in the 87th minute.
