Cody Gakpo Transfer Latest: Tottenham Interest Raises Big Liverpool Question

Gakpo Future Becomes Early Iraola Test

Cody Gakpo has become one of the first major questions of Liverpool’s new era under Andoni Iraola, with Soccer News reporting that the Dutch forward has expressed his “wish to leave” Anfield following Arne Slot’s departure.

It is a development that lands awkwardly for Liverpool. Gakpo was once seen as one of the more adaptable pieces in the attacking puzzle, a forward capable of operating from the left, through the middle, or between the lines. In theory, that should make him valuable to any incoming coach. In practice, his future now appears clouded by uncertainty, poor form, and a market that seems increasingly aware Liverpool may be vulnerable.

Soccer News report that Tottenham have serious interest in the player, with Spurs said to be preparing a plan to tempt both Gakpo and Liverpool. Their project under Roberto De Zerbi is being framed as part of the appeal, particularly with a growing Dutch influence already visible in north London.

Tottenham Interest Puts Liverpool Under Pressure

The timing is significant. Liverpool are already facing major change, with Andy Robertson joining Tottenham, Ibrahima Konate linked with Real Madrid, and Mohamed Salah also set to leave this summer. Losing Gakpo too would deepen the sense of an attack being stripped back to its foundations.

Gakpo, who can look elegant when confidence flows, too often seemed caught between roles, neither explosive winger nor ruthless centre forward. Yet that does not mean he lacks value. It may mean Liverpool failed to give him a structure in which his best qualities could consistently appear.

Dutch Forward Still Has Something To Offer

Gakpo remains 27, experienced, technically secure, and tactically intelligent. For Tottenham, that is obvious appeal. For Liverpool, it should also trigger caution. Selling a player after one poor campaign can be understandable, but selling him during a wider attacking reset risks turning short term frustration into long term regret.

Soccer News claim Spurs “intend to try to pry the Dutchman away from Liverpool in the coming period,” while adding that clubs from England, Spain, and Germany are also interested. That level of attention suggests the market still sees something Liverpool supporters have perhaps forgotten during a grim campaign.

Iraola Must Decide Quickly

Iraola’s first task is not simply to buy. It is to judge. Gakpo may not be untouchable, but he should not be treated as expendable without a clear plan. If Liverpool sell, they need a replacement with pace, goals, pressing ability, and positional discipline. If they keep him, Iraola must define his role quickly.

Gakpo’s future now feels like a test of Liverpool’s wider thinking. Are they clearing space with purpose, or simply reacting to a failed season? Tottenham will hope it is the latter. Liverpool must prove it is not.

Our View – Anfield Index Analysis

From a Liverpool fan’s perspective, the Gakpo situation feels more complicated than simply saying he should stay or go. His form has clearly dipped, and supporters have every right to expect more from a forward who should be entering his peak years. Yet context matters.

Gakpo has often been moved around too much. Left wing one week, centre forward the next, deeper role after that. That can make a player look passive when the real issue is uncertainty. He is not Salah, he is not Luis Diaz, and he is not a pure number nine. He needs patterns, runners, and a side that knows how to create space around him.

That is why Iraola’s arrival is important. If the new head coach sees Gakpo as a defined left sided forward who can attack the box, link play, and press intelligently, there is still a player worth keeping. If he sees him as a squad asset with decent resale value, then Liverpool may listen.

The worry is Tottenham. Losing Robertson to Spurs was bad enough emotionally. Watching Gakpo rediscover himself there would sting. Liverpool have already lost too much attacking certainty. Selling another forward without a serious replacement lined up would feel reckless.

Gakpo should not be immune from criticism, but he should not become a scapegoat either. Liverpool’s attack failed collectively. Iraola must decide whether Gakpo was part of the problem, or a player damaged by it.
