Rui Costa gives go-ahead for Benfica to bid for Nahuel Herrera

Benfica are set to bid for Peñarol centre-back Nahuel Herrera after Rui Costa gave the move the go-ahead.

According to Glorioso 1904, the 21-year-old has been identified as the prime target and a formal approach is expected soon, although one hurdle remains.

Peñarol are inclined to negotiate and are seeking around eight million euros, with a sell-on of roughly 20% retained on any future transfer.

Head coach Diego Aguirre wants to keep Herrera for at least six months. Benfica could sign him now, then leave him on loan at Peñarol until the summer window opens.

This season Herrera, valued at 4.5 million euros, has made 40 appearances for Peñarol, 30 in the Uruguayan league, eight in the Copa Libertadores and two in the Uruguay Cup. He has scored two goals across 3,448 minutes.
