Sunderland return to the Stadium of Light after the international break with one of the Premier League’s biggest gates, their average crowd ranking ninth ahead of Tottenham’s visit.
They are fresh from a 2-1 win at Newcastle United that sealed a league double over their fiercest rivals. According to Sunderland Echo, their home average of 46,323 is the club’s highest since 2001/02 and the fourth-highest on record.
Across the division, Manchester United lead with 73,962, more than 11,000 clear of West Ham’s 62,454 at the London Stadium. Tottenham draw 60,939, with Liverpool on 60,368 and Arsenal 60,216. The figure places Sunderland above Aston Villa, Chelsea and Leeds United, owing to the Stadium of Light’s capacity.
The ground remains smaller than Newcastle United’s St James Park and Everton’s new Hill Dickinson Stadium, so several clubs post higher averages. Even so, Sunderland are among the best supported in England and across Europe’s top five leagues, and they have lost only three of 15 home league matches.
Tottenham have won only two home league matches this season yet still draw big crowds. They come to Wearside on Sunday, 12th April, chasing a vital result in their bid for survival.
