Sunderland return to the Stadium of Light after the international break buoyed by a 2-1 win at Newcastle United. The derby double underlines a superb first season back in the Premier League.
According to Sunderland Echo, their average home crowd of 46,323 is the club’s best since 2001/02 and the fourth-highest on record.
That figure ranks ninth in the Premier League, above Aston Villa, Chelsea and Leeds United, thanks to the Stadium of Light’s capacity.
Manchester United lead the division with 73,962, more than 11,000 clear of West Ham on 62,454 at the London Stadium. Tottenham average 60,939 despite only two home league wins.
Sunderland’s support sits among the strongest in England and across Europe’s top five leagues, and it has told at home, where they have lost only three of 15 league matches.
The Black Cats are on 43 points with seven games left and are chasing an unlikely European spot under Regis Le Bris. Tottenham visit the Stadium of Light on Sunday, 12th April seeking a vital result in their fight for survival.
