Sunderland’s derby euphoria has been followed by a fresh forecast for their Premier League finish, with analytics projecting a 12th-place outcome on 51.15 points. According to Sunderland Echo, Opta’s model has the Black Cats ending just outside the top half after their victory at St James Park.
Regis Le Bris’ side fell behind inside the opening 10 minutes when Anthony Gordon capitalised on a Luke O’Nien header to put Newcastle ahead. The visitors regrouped and grew into the contest.
Chemsdine Talbi levelled just before the hour, unsettling the hosts on and off the pitch. Sunderland pushed for a decisive strike to complete a league double and extend their unbeaten run in league derbies to 11 games.
Brian Brobbey provided it in the final minute, beating Aaron Ramsdale at the second attempt to spark wild celebrations in the away end. Results across the weekend left Sunderland 11th, three points shy of the European places going into the final international break.
Le Bris called winning two derbies in the same year a big achievement and said Newcastle’s first-half intensity made it a tough assignment. He praised his players’ reaction to the early mistake, noted the half-time reset, and said the win means a lot to the team, staff and fans. He added they want to keep improving.
