Sunderland are weighing tweaks to Régis Le Bris’ coaching team, with talks under way to bring Gateshead player-coach Pete Jameson, 33, into the academy, according to Sunderland Echo.

Nothing is final yet, but Jameson is in discussions over a role working chiefly with the U18 and U21 goalkeepers, which could also influence the structure above academy level.

Jonny Maddison, who has worked in the academy and was with the first-team group before the recent Manchester United game, could step up as a first-team goalkeeper coach.

He would work under lead goalkeeping coach Neil Cutler, who joined last summer.

Sunderland-born Jameson came through Middlesbrough’s academy, played for Sunderland RCA, then joined Darlington in 2013 before later spells with Blyth Spartans, York City, Harrogate Town and Hartlepool United.

He spent 2023-24 on loan at Hartlepool from Harrogate, making 21 appearances, then joined Gateshead as player-coach in July 2025 and subsequently returned to Darlington on short-term deals.

In the academy, Matty Young is close to a new deal after impressing at Salford City, Ben Metcalf’s one-year option has been triggered, and Joe Cowan and Isaac Allan remain under contract.

Dan Cameron and Adam Richardson are set to depart as the club review the wider coaching set-up after their first season back, having parted with assistant head coach Luciano Vulcano in February.

Isidre Ramón Madir continues to lead opposition analysis, Michael Proctor stays on Le Bris’ staff, and the club want sufficient specialist support across the pathway, though no appointment is complete.
