Sunderland are weighing tweaks to Régis Le Bris’ coaching structure, with talks under way to bring former Middlesbrough and Hartlepool United goalkeeper Pete Jameson, 33, into the Academy of Light.
According to Sunderland Echo, nothing has been finalised and discussions continue over Jameson joining the academy staff.
The current Gateshead player-coach would be expected to work primarily with Sunderland’s U18s and U21s, and his arrival could have a knock-on effect higher up.
Jonny Maddison could step up as a first-team goalkeeper coach, having been involved before the recent Manchester United game. He has worked in the academy and was part of Leicester City’s Premier League title-winning squad.
If promoted, Maddison would work under lead goalkeeping coach Neil Cutler, who arrived last summer and is highly regarded. Sporting director Florent Ghisolfi is keen to deepen specialist provision across the pathway.
Former goalkeeping lead Alessandro Barcherini remains on Le Bris’ staff after moving into a broader assistant and first-team coach role, with a stronger focus on the defence and individual development plans.
Sunderland-born Jameson came through Middlesbrough’s youth ranks, then featured for Consett, Sunderland RCA and Darlington, making more than 130 appearances, before spells at Blyth Spartans, York City, Harrogate Town and Hartlepool United.
He spent 2023-24 on loan at Hartlepool from Harrogate, playing 21 times, then returned to Darlington in 2024 and joined Gateshead as player-coach in July 2025, with further Darlington loans including an emergency stint this year.
Wider coaching reviews continue after the club’s Premier League return.
