Tom Lees trains with Rotherham as Alex Bruce assesses potential deal | OneFootball

Former Leeds United defender Tom Lees is training with Rotherham United, opening the door to a possible reunion with head coach Alex Bruce.

"He's one that we're looking at," he said. "Obviously, he's an experienced player. I've known Tom for a long time. He's been in a couple of times to do a couple of sessions. We've got to monitor him. His pedigree speaks for itself. We need to make sure it's right for Tom and make sure he's right for us. We're going to see how that pans out over the next few days." He told the Rotherham Advertiser. Bruce was speaking after a pre-season draw at Matlock Town.

Lees spent the 2025/26 campaign in League One with Peterborough United before leaving when his contract expired. The 35-year-old has almost 700 senior appearances since debuting on loan from Leeds at Accrington Stanley in 2009.

Rotherham will be in League Two next season and last month confirmed Bruce as head coach. He spent two years at Leeds and lined up alongside Lees a handful of times.

Their links at Elland Road included seven appearances together in the 2011/12 Championship. Bruce joined Huddersfield Town on loan in November 2011 but was recalled a month later after Lees suffered a knock, and the pair then featured under Neil Warnock.

Lees made 135 Leeds appearances before a 2014 move to Sheffield Wednesday, where he played 274 games across seven years, then spent four years at Huddersfield Town. Bruce retired in 2022, later coaching Macclesfield Town and Salford City, and Rotherham is his first full EFL managerial role.
