Brian Farinas is set to leave Barcelona for Girona, with the two Catalan clubs now finalising an operation that should give the young midfielder a valuable opportunity at a higher level.
The 20-year-old has reached the stage where another season with Barca Atletic in Segunda RFEF would offer limited progression. After a strong individual campaign, the chance to compete in the Segunda Division represents a logical next step.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the move is now considered imminent and could be completed within hours. Farinas remains under contract with Barcelona until 2028, but the operation is expected to be structured as a permanent transfer rather than a loan.
The reported fee is around €1.5 million, while Barca would retain 50 percent of the player’s rights. That detail allows the club to receive immediate income without completely losing control of his future value.
Farinas was one of the strongest performers in a difficult season for Barca Atletic. Under Juliano Belletti, he finished with five goals and seven assists across 33 appearances, impressive numbers for a midfielder.
His consistency also earned him a role as one of the reserve team’s captains. Hansi Flick observed him during several first-team training sessions, but Barcelona’s crowded midfield made a clear senior pathway difficult to guarantee.
At Girona, Farinas should find a more demanding competitive environment and a realistic chance to establish himself in professional football. Regular minutes in the second tier could reveal whether he is ready to make another major step in the coming years.
From Barca’s perspective, keeping 50 percent of his rights is the most important part of the deal. Selling an academy player cheaply can become painful if he develops quickly elsewhere, but this structure ensures the club remain connected to his progress.
Farinas joined Barcelona from Villarreal’s youth system in 2018 and has completed an important stage of his development at La Masia. His departure should not be viewed as the club giving up on him.
