The Three Lions played their first game of the international break on Saturday 6th September and four Arsenal players were included in the starting eleven, the first time in eleven years. England played host to Andorra at Villa Park and ran out comfortable 2-0 winners, maintaining a perfect qualifying campaign after five rounds of fixtures. Four Arsenal players were called up for the September internationals and the said quartet were all included in the starting eleven against Andorra. Myles Lewis-Skelly, Declan Rice, Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke were played from the start, playing an instrumental role in the two nil win.
It was the first time since October 2014 versus San Marino, that four Arsenal players all started a game for the Three Lions, Callum Chambers, Kieran Gibbs, Danny Welbeck and Jack Wilshere. This is arguably a direct result of the club’s efforts to fill the squad with more homegrown talent. Perhaps a perfect illustration is the fact three of the four starters were signed within the last two years, with Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze being the most recent acquisitions. The number of Arsenal players in the Three Lions squad could have been five had it not been for Bukayo Saka’s unfortunate injury. Declan Rice put in a solid, all round display against Andorra. The former West Ham man doubled England’s lead with a header in the 67th minute before being substituted just minutes later. Arsenal’s summer recruit Noni Madueke also starred against Andorra, creating the most chances of the game (3).

Arsenal players have generally performed well so far in the international break. Martin Zubimendi and Mikel Merino have already made goal contributions for Spain, while the likes of Gabriel, Riccardo Calafiori and Piero Hincapié have played starring roles in defence. Despite their impressive displays, many will hope they do not pick up any niggles before club football resumes. A tough run of fixtures await after the international break and Mikel Arteta will be looking to keep a fit squad.
Interesting fact gooners?
