Bernardo Silva has reached a two-year agreement with Real Madrid and is set to work under José Mourinho. The former Benfica midfielder chose Madrid after talks with Barcelona.
According to Correio da Manhã, Madrid made contact late on Wednesday, and the 31-year-old free agent, whose Manchester City contract had ended, accepted immediately.
He rejected lucrative offers from Saudi clubs and stepped away from Barcelona, choosing Madrid instead.
José Mourinho was decisive throughout. Club executives had insisted they did not need the former Benfica player, but the stance shifted. Before formalising Mourinho’s appointment, Florentino Pérez sealed the agreement with Bernardo on Wednesday.
With his future settled, Bernardo can focus on Portugal. The squad leave for the United States on Friday for the World Cup. They are in Group K and open on Wednesday 17 against DR Congo.
