Castellón’s feelgood run continued as Leganés were beaten at SkyFi Castalia on a night of emotion, rain and refereeing flashpoints, keeping the hosts in the upper reaches of the table.
According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, a LaLiga 42 legados initiative brought players, relatives and some of the club’s longest serving members together before kick-off. Those due to attend included socio number 1 Román J. Ferrer Palau and Joaquina Albiol Castellano, with families of Beñat Gerenabarrena, Diego Barri, Lucas Alcázar and Agustín Sienra also involved, as well as the parents of coach Pablo Hernández and assistant Sergi Ripollés. Participants posed with the starting XI to warm applause.
Referee Dámaso Arcediano, who gave the bizarre Salva Ruiz handball penalty at Málaga, was booed from the warm-up. His night mixed errors and correct calls.
An assistant’s flag ruled out a Cala goal for a prior offside by Camara after a lengthy VAR review and a TV graphic that was hard to explain. The incident prompted a tweet from president Haralabos Voulgaris.
Heavy rain arrived late in the first half, sending raincoats and umbrellas up across the stands. It eased by half-time and the crowd of 10,612 was an impressive turnout for a Friday night.
A later penalty awarded to Cala ultimately secured the win. After Suero made it 2-0, the anthem was sung in added time and the manta al coll echoed around the ground.
