Corinthians striker celebrates, responds to São Paulo nemesis talk

Corinthians defeated São Paulo and took the lead in the race for a spot in the final of the Women’s Paulista Championship. The big highlight was Jhonson, who scored two goals, teased the opposing fans, and celebrated her good form after a dry spell in the Women’s Libertadores.

“First of all, I want to thank God, a lot of hard work every day, I’m very happy that my teammates supported me so much, they told me to always believe in rebounds, to believe in my speed. I believed and came away with two goals, I’m very happy,” said the forward in the mixed zone at Arena Barueri, where the derby took place.

As mentioned, the number 40 teased the crowd, but made it clear it wasn’t meant as provocation. She also talked about her ‘habit’ of scoring against São Paulo lately. “How can I put this? It’s the fans, right? I had to send that message, tell them to calm down a bit, because it’s Coringão. It wasn’t provocation, no, not at all, just a little something, just a striker thing when you score… I won’t say I’m their nemesis, because there’s still the next game, if God blesses me and I score in the next game, then I’ll be their nemesis“

Jhonson started the season on a high, but towards the end of the Brasileirão and the start of the Libertadores, she went through a rough patch that saw her benched. She spoke about the mental side of things during that time.

“Ah, it was tough, really tough, because I was scoring in every game. Then I stopped scoring, had chances but didn’t convert, it really got to me, but I put it in God’s hands, and God blessed me, that’s it, I went back to scoring,” said Jhonson.

The next match will take place after the FIFA international break for women’s football, at the beginning of December. The decisive match against São Paulo will be held at Neo Química Arena, on December 4, with the possibility of six absences due to call-ups.
