Didier Deschamps has left the France camp in Boston following the death of his mother and will miss Friday’s match against Norway. Assistant Guy Stéphan will take charge in his absence.

The federation announced in a statement that he would not lead training before the game and would not be on the bench. In agreement with federation president Philippe Diallo, responsibility has been handed to Stéphan while Deschamps returns to France for the funeral.

Deschamps departed the base on Tuesday after receiving the news. He told staff and players shortly before lunch, having already informed some individually, and the announcement was met with silence and deep emotion.

Stéphan will oversee the next two training sessions at Bentley University and conduct the pre-match press conference. He will also be on the bench in Boston at 21:00 for France’s final group game at this World Cup.

Deschamps should return on Saturday, the day after the game. He previously missed the 1-2 defeat to Denmark in June 2022 following his father’s death, and will remain in contact with Stéphan ahead of the game to discuss selection and player fitness. The pair have worked together for nearly 20 years, forming a duo for 16.
