Eddie Howe says Sandro Tonali and Joe Willock are likely to be available for Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby at St James’ Park, but Lewis Miley will miss out.
According to Sunderland Echo, the Newcastle United head coach confirmed Tonali and Willock had travelled for Wednesday’s Champions League last-16 second leg at Barcelona and could feature at Spotify Camp Nou. Willock, who went off in the second half of the 1-0 win over Chelsea, is among the travelling squad.
Miley did not make the trip and will not be ready for Sunderland’s visit. The teenager has been out since late January after a dead leg caused muscle damage, and he trained at home. Howe said a return was probably after the international break.
Howe said it was the first day they had seen Tonali, and any training and involvement would depend on how strong he felt. Willock will also be checked in training, with the head coach hopeful he will be fine.
With Barcelona and the derby ahead, Howe described his squad as as confident as they have been all season and the happiest he has felt. He added that he hopes Newcastle are peaking at the right time.
