The 72 clubs of the EFL are set to vote on expanding the Championship play-offs to include six clubs.

The idea of the expansion of the play-offs in the second tier has been floated around before but according to reporting by Matt Hughes of The Guardian a date has now been set for a decision.

Clubs from the Championship, League One, and League Two will all vote on the proposal on March 5th where a majority would see the play-off expansion approved.

Should the change go through future Championship seasons could see the teams that finish third and fourth go on to place winners of games between fifth and eight and sixth and seventh – a format that will be familiar with followers of the National League.

The move is supposedly opposed by the Premier League over concerns of the quality of the promoted side should an eighth-placed Championship team make into the top flight.
