PEC Zwolle missed out on the Conference League play offs by two points, having made a late charge in May. Winning three out of their last four games, the 1-1 draw to Go Ahead Eagles proved to be costly, as Heerenveen claimed the last spot. Despite their great form in May, a run of one win between the start of February and the end of April also hugely dented those play off aspirations. The highlight of their season was a convincing 3-1 win over PSV in January. Despite this, it has been a big season of progress for Zwolle. In their season back in the Eredivisie, they bettered their points tally and position compared to last year.
In the KNVB Cup, they were disappointingly knocked out in the first round by NEC Nijmegen.
The 23-year-old Bulgarian international has been a breath of fresh air throughout the campaign. On loan from Belgian side Lommel, Krastev has registered six goals and four assists for Zwolle, starting the season with a wonderful strike against Feyenoord.
Mbayo has been an exciting prospect for Zwolle, enjoying a fantastic start to the season. With four goals and seven assists, he was Zwolle’s most influential creator in many games. he also showed brilliant speed on the counter attack, serving as an outlet in high pressure games.
PEC Zwolle have already lost one of their most influential players. Davy van den Berg will join Utrecht on a free transfer this summer, having enjoyed a very successful season. The 25-year-old featured in 32 of their league matches and played in a number of midfield roles. His versatility will need to be urgently replaced, as well addressing the issue that Krastev, Mbayo and top scorer Dylan Vente have loan spells that are all running out. PEC Zwolle will need to add firepower to their ranks if they are to push for the play offs again.
