Luton Town recently announced the appointment of Jack Wilshere as their manager
The Hatters have experienced some massive highs and heartbreaking lows over the past few years, following their promotion to the Premier League in 2023.
Under Rob Edwards, the Kenilworth Road outfit resisted relegation from the top-flight but were ultimately unsuccessful and couldn’t bounce back in the Championship.
Edwards was relieved of his duties as Luton edged closer towards successive relegations, with Matt Bloomfield selected as the man to prevent such a thing happening.
Bloomfield failed in doing so and after 11 matches in League One, was given his marching orders due to unimpressive performances.
Wilshere has now been selected as the man to steer the Hatters towards a promotion fight, in what is his first full-time job as a first-team manager in professional football.
The former Arsenal midfielder took his very first steps in the game in Luton Town’s Centre of Excellence, before joining the Gunners when he was nine.
Wilshere’s was part of Johannes Hoff Thorup’s coaching staff at Norwich City last season and led some of the Canaries’ matches towards the end of the season following Hoff Thorup’s dismissal.
The 33-year-old provides plenty of reasons for the Hatters’ faithful to get excited, with the potential of his modern ideas providing the perfect antidote to their current woes. However, there are some potential drawbacks that could arise too.
Discussing Wilshere’s appointment on the ‘What the EFL?!’ podcast, former Arsenal and EFL midfielder, Adrian Clarke, revealed that he believes Luton have taken quite the gamble in selecting a manager with such little experience.
“I think this is a win for him,” stated Clarke. “Whether it’s a win for Luton, I don’t know.
“I don’t know whether I would have been brave enough if I was Luton to go with Jack Wilshere.
“He’s an unproven entity isn’t he? Has he got that tactical acumen that you need sometimes.
“I hope Jack Wilshere becomes a brilliant manager, but in the here and now, none of us know whether he has got what it takes. We’ll see.”
Naturally, Wilshere’s lack of experience will be telling at some points during his time as Luton boss and he will have to go through the trials and tribulations every manager faces during their first job.
This is all part of the learning process and the Hatters will hope that it doesn’t affect their ranking in the league table too much.
However, the 33-year-old wouldn’t have been appointed if it wasn’t for the obvious talent he possesses.
Over the years, Wilshere has witnessed first-hand how tacticians such as Arsene Wenger and Mikel Arteta work with their squads and will no doubt have carried those teachings into his own tactical style.
Only time will tell whether the former Gunners midfielder’s lack of experience seriously comes to hamper him at Kenilworth Road, but the time he spent with Arsenal and Norwich should’ve provided him with the necessary ability to lead forward a League One dressing room.
