Flamengo have begun talks with 35-year-old left-back Alex Sandro about extending his contract, which expires in December, by one more season to the end of 2027, according to Globo.com.

The player had previously told people close to him he hoped to move to a less physically demanding market after his deal ended, but he has viewed Flamengo’s interest in another year positively.

Negotiations are trending towards agreement, though any decision is expected only after the World Cup. Alex Sandro is one of four Flamengo players called up by Brazil, alongside Danilo, Léo Pereira and Paquetá, and reported on Wednesday to Carlo Ancelotti at Granja Comary in Teresópolis.

Since arriving in the second half of 2024, he has made 78 appearances, scoring one goal with two assists, and lifted six trophies, two Cariocas, the Copa do Brasil, the Brasileiro, the Libertadores and the Supercopa. He became an undisputed starter, but his 2026 form has dipped and he has faced criticism.

If the renewal is signed, it could, however, pave the way for Ayrton Lucas to depart, despite his contract running to the end of 2027. Flamengo intend to bring in another left-back for next season, with Kaiki of Cruzeiro, 23, identified as plan A on the recommendation of coach Leonardo Jardim.
