Jordan Henderson suffered a freak wrist injury after England beat co-hosts Mexico in the last 16 to reach the World Cup quarter-finals. According to Sunderland Echo, he was taken to hospital and the outlet has suggested he will not return to the squad’s Kansas City base, instead receiving treatment in Mexico City.

Two goals from Jude Bellingham and a Harry Kane penalty saw the Three Lions edge a five-goal thriller at the Azteca Stadium in front of a 100,000-strong crowd. Jarell Quansah’s straight red, given after a VAR review, left England playing over 40 minutes with 10 men.

The incident came after the final whistle when Henderson fell awkwardly over an advertising board while celebrating with team-mates in front of travelling England supporters.

England manager Thomas Tuchel said his emotions were mixed, praising the team’s mentality and calling it a very special night after they overcame multiple obstacles to progress. He added he felt sad about Henderson’s injury, described it as quite serious, and said he did not yet know the next steps.

The Academy of Light graduate did not feature, remaining an unused substitute throughout.
