England reached the World Cup quarter-final by beating Mexico in a five-goal thriller at the Azteca Stadium, but celebrations ended with Jordan Henderson taken to hospital with a wrist injury, manager Thomas Tuchel said.

Two goals from Jude Bellingham and a Harry Kane penalty edged out the co-hosts in front of a 100,000 crowd. The Three Lions played for over 40 minutes with ten men after Jarell Quansah was sent off following a VAR review of his challenge on Jesus Gallardo.

Henderson, an unused substitute, fell awkwardly over an advertising board while celebrating with team-mates in front of travelling England supporters moments after the final whistle. Reports have suggested he will not travel back to England’s Kansas City base and will receive treatment in a Mexico City hospital.

Tuchel praised his side’s mentality, saying this stage is about finding a way to win and that they overcame every obstacle. He described it as a very special night.

He was also saddened by Henderson’s injury, calling it quite serious, and said he did not yet know the next steps after a brief update from medical staff.
