England reached the World Cup quarter-final with victory over co-hosts Mexico at the Azteca, but the night was marred when Jordan Henderson was taken to hospital with a post-match wrist injury.

According to Sunderland Echo, England manager Thomas Tuchel confirmed the former Sunderland midfielder, an unused substitute, hurt his wrist after falling over an advertising board while celebrating with team-mates in front of travelling fans.

Two goals from Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham and a Harry Kane penalty edged a five-goal thriller played before a 100,000 crowd at the iconic stadium.

England had to see out more than 40 minutes with ten men after former Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah was shown a straight red card following a VAR review of a challenge on Jesus Gallardo.

Tuchel said he had mixed emotions, praising his side’s mentality and heart and calling it a very special night after overcoming repeated obstacles.

He added that he was exhausted and saddened by Henderson’s injury, describing it as serious, noting the midfielder was in hospital and that procedures were still unclear.

Reports suggested Henderson will remain in Mexico City for treatment and will not travel to England’s Kansas City base.
