Lauren Hemp says City did everything right as we claimed a 3-0 Manchester derby victory at the Etihad Stadium.
The England international helped the Blues to secure an eighth successive Barclays Women’s Super League victory as her winning goal saw us move seven points clear of our cross-city rivals.
Rebecca Knaak opened the scoring with a perfect header, as she recorded her third headed goal in three derby appearances.
Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw soon doubled our lead after a brilliant run from Jade Rose coupled with an outrageous cross from Kerstin Casparij. It also marked the Jamaican’s 97th goal for City.
Finally, Hemp left everyone in the stadium stunned in added time of the first-half, as she slammed her unstoppable strike into the roof of the net, in what was her first start since Tottenham.
Speaking to BBC Sport she described how good it is to be back on the pitch.
“I absolutely loved it. It’s so nice to be back with all the girls,” she said.
“Today we showed the mentality that we needed to show. We got a clean sheet as well which is so important for us and, most importantly, we got the three points.”
With today’s result we stay top of the table on 24 points and Hemp says it’s good for fans to get excited about being four points clear.
“It’s so exciting. It’s important we stay humble,” she added.
“We know where we’re at and we’re in a good place as a team. Hopefully we’ll continue this run.”
