Andrée Jeglertz hailed Lauren Hemp’s offensive and defensive impact in City’s superb 3-0 win over Manchester United at the Etihad.

The England international started the strong success over our cross-city rivals and scored our third of the afternoon when slamming the ball into the roof of the net from range on the cusp of half-time.

Hemp’s start against Marc Skinner’s side represented her first since our emphatic 5-1 triumph over Spurs in mid-September where she sustained an ankle injury in the capital.

She made up for any time lost, though, in the derby with a combative and direct performance which was praised by City’s head coach after the Barclays Women’s Super League success.

“Lauren, every time when she has the ball she has a great left foot of course but also her ability to always engage the full back and try to play forward,” Jeglertz explained

“’Can I make a cross?’, ‘should I challenge one against one?’ and she’s giving us a lot of that.

“But also in this game we were demanding a little more on the defensive part because Jayde Riviere is great fullback on that side. We put more demand on her to take care of her.

“We struggled a bit in the first minutes, finding the positions her and Leila’ but after that, in the rest of the game it was awesome.

“For us Lauren’s a great player, I’m so happy for her coming and giving this performance. But for us it’s also about never being satisfied.

“We have a great squad and we have so many great players. Iman’s [Beney] played many games and done great, Lauren gives something different which is good for us.

“No matter if we are winning one game, it doesn’t mean it’s the same XI the next week.

“Depending on how the week looks, what we need from the game, that is going to be crucial for us to switch players no matter if we’re winning.”

In the absence of City captain Alex Greenwood against Manchester United, Jeglertz started Rebecca Knaak, Jade Rose, Kerstin Casparij and Leila Ouahabi as his defensive lieutenants at the Etihad.

All four then contributed to our second WSL clean sheet of the term in a watertight display which kept Skinner’s side at bay.

And Jeglertz is pleased to see each member of the backline quartet step into leasership roles in Greenwood’s absence as she recovers from an injury sustained at the end of October.

He added: “Of course, we all miss Alex [Greenwood] in the team, no doubt about that.

“But just to see Rebecca [Knaak] come in and take her leadership role and Kerstin, talking about her, and talking about Leila and Jade because they’re all like that.

“When a big leader isn’t there, other players step in and do it in a good way.

“They’ve shown that in two games now that others take a bigger role for that [leadership].

“Of course it’s important to keep a clean sheet, we needed that, we’ve conceded a little bit too many goals so it’s important for giving confidence in that too.”
