It now looks clear that Inter will be signing a defender this summer.

The injury to wingback Tajon Buchanan has accelerated this. The 25-year-old Canadian international will miss several months as he recovers from a broken tibia.

Inter Sporting Director Piero Ausilio has acknowledged that the club’s strategy is not to replace Buchanan like-for-like with another wingback.

Rather, the Nerazzurri will aim to sign a left-sided defender.

That way, there can be a backup for Alessandro Bastoni in the squad other than Carlos Augusto. This would free up the Brazilian international to play exclusively or primarily at wingback.

Therefore, there would theoretically be sufficient depth both in the back three and on the flanks.

Inter are looking at a number of possible targets in defense. And one player on the Nerazzurri’s radar is Genoa defender Vazquez, according to Il GIorno.

The 25-year-old Mexican international is currently at Genoa.

Vazquez spent the 2021-22 season with the Grifone, whilst he was on loan at Cremonese during the 2022-23 campaign.

And last season, Vazquez was a regular starter under Alberto Gilardino.

The Mexican’s pace made him an ideal option on the left of the back three system that the Grifone coach deployed last season.

And this has also caught Inter’s attention. Stylistically speaking, the left-footed Vazquez would be a fairly apt backup for Alessandro Bastoni in defense.

Meanwhile, Inter have already all but completed the signing of one other Genoa player.

Goalkeeper Josep Martinez is on his way.

And the Nerazzurri are also reportedly still keen on Grifone forward Albert Gudmundsson as a target for next season.
