According to BILD, the Saxony-based club plan to promote Maarten Vandevoordt to the No.1 role this summer, with long-serving Peter Gulácsi expected to step aside after over a decade as the club’s starter.
Gulácsi has been a mainstay at Leipzig since joining in 2015, racking up more than 350 appearances across all competitions and playing a key role in the club’s rise both domestically and in Europe. However, with the Hungarian now 35, Leipzig appear ready to initiate a planned transition.
Vandevoordt was signed in the summer of 2024 as a long-term successor, and the highly-rated Belgian is now poised to take centre stage between the sticks. Leipzig see him as the future of the position and are ready to hand him full responsibility from the upcoming campaign.
Gulácsi is not expected to depart the club, though. The veteran goalkeeper is reportedly close to extending his contract until 2027, accepting a significant salary reduction and a new role as back-up and mentor to Vandevoordt. Talks are said to be at an advanced stage, with an official announcement anticipated in the coming weeks.
Leipzig are also aiming to secure further stability in the department, with BILD reporting that third-choice goalkeeper Leopold Zingerle will extend his contract until 2028. With the hierarchy clearly defined, Die Roten Bullen appear to have their goalkeeping future mapped out for the seasons ahead, prioritising continuity as they enter a new era in goal.
