Chelsea were beaten 2-1 by Sunderland at the Stadium of Light this afternoon, finishing a terrible season on a low.
The game started like so many others this season for the Blues – they looked intimidated by the boisterous atmosphere and really never came out to play.
They don’t have anything close to the intensity they need to even compete in games like this. It’s embarrassing. When Sunderland did eventually score it was after a series of chances, and it had very much been coming.
It was route one – Robin Roefs punted it forward, Marc Cucurella was caught up the field and Jorrel Hato lost his header. Trai Hume hit a really nice finish on the bounce, leaving Robert Sanchez with no chance.
After half time the lead was doubled. Enzo Le Fee cut the ball back to Brian Brobbey, whose cross went off Malo Gusto’s shins and in. The next few minutes were hectic – Chelsea made it 2-1 through Cole Palmer’s low drive, before Wesley Fofana saw his second red of the season, this time for a second yellow fouling Brobbey as he ran through.
After that, it was over. Chelsea barely threatened again, and they limped to their latest humiliating defeat of the season, one that rules them out of European football next season. Thank god this one is over.
MOTM – Cole Palmer
There is no analysis of this game which couldn’t apply to this whole season, and in fact this whole Chelsea era. The players are so mentally weak that any sort of physicality or intensity spooks them. The moment you saw the Sunderland crowd ready to receive their team, you knew the Blues were going to utterly surrender.
This spineless Chelsea team give up when they go behind, and they often give up just because they think they don’t have a chance. It’s an utterly rotten sporting culture and it’s hard to see how we fix it.

“We’re as disappointed as [the fans] and we’re gutted we couldn’t do it for them. We felt their presence, and unfortunately we’ve let them down. We weren’t able to put the performance in that they deserved.” – An apologetic Calum McFarlane lies about his players’ motivation after another embarrassing defeat.
