Jose Mourinho has found himself to become a hot topic within the Real Madrid circles, especially after the Portuguese tactician asked reporters not to include him in their ‘soap operas’.

It was a direct response to recent speculations linking him with a return to Santiago Bernabeu. To make things even more interesting, his former confidant at Real Madrid, Aitor Karanka, has recently revealed that Real Madrid had approached Mourinho at some point.

Therefore, Mourinho will quite naturally become the centre of attention when Real Madrid take on SL Benfica in the Champions League later this month.

What Mourinho said about Real Madrid vs Benfica clash

Speaking after Benfica’s 2-0 defeat to Juventus this week, Mourinho was asked about his team’s proposition heading into the final league game against his former team.

Benfica, after all, must win against Los Blancos in order to stand a chance of qualifying to the next round, whereas Real Madrid are looking to secure a place inside the top eight with yet another big win.

“Even though it’s practically impossible, practically doesn’t mean impossible,” Mourinho remarked (h/t Mundo Deportivo).

“The culture we have in this group is that, regardless of the objectives, when Benfica plays, you have to give your best, play with the responsibility of being Benfica, and give your all,” he added.

The former Real Madrid coach added that Benfica will give everything they can to secure three points in this final league game in the UCL.He also added that he has little care as to who is the opponent.

“So it doesn’t change much whether it’s practically possible or not. We know it’s Real Madrid, obviously. We know that, at this moment, we’re a Benfica with limitations, but we’ll give everything,” he concluded.

Having started his managerial career at Benfica 25 years ago, this is Mourinho’s second spell with the Eagles. In between this gap, the Portuguese tactician has managed nine different clubs, including Real Madrid, Chelsea and Inter Milan.
