Sunderland have condemned racist abuse directed at Lutsharel Geertruida during the Tyne-Wear derby at St James' Park, calling for zero tolerance and no excuses around such incidents.

The match was briefly halted in the second half, with referee Anthony Taylor speaking to both sets of players and staff before play resumed. The club said in a statement that it stands with Geertruida and praised him for reporting the incident to match officials during the game.

Sunderland also acknowledged Newcastle's response and expects those responsible to be identified and held to account, adding that football must be safe and inclusive for everyone.

Newcastle United are aware of the allegation and will work with the authorities to investigate fully. The club does not tolerate discrimination and will ensure any individuals are identified and held accountable.

A full investigation by the Premier League Match Centre is under way, with support offered to the player and both clubs, and a commitment to inclusive, welcoming stadiums.
