Sunderland and Newcastle condemned alleged racist abuse aimed at Lutsharel Geertruida during the Tyne-Wear derby at St James’ Park, and moved to support a full investigation.
The match was briefly halted in the second half, with referee Anthony Taylor speaking to both teams and staff before play resumed.
According to Sunderland Echo, Sunderland offered Geertruida full backing, praised him for reporting the incident to officials, and insisted there should be no tolerance, no excuses or ambiguity around racism. The club acknowledged Newcastle’s statement and said it expects those responsible to be identified and held to account, while stressing football must be a safe, inclusive environment for all.
Newcastle confirmed it was aware of the allegation made by a visiting player against someone in the crowd during the Premier League fixture, pledged to work with the authorities to investigate fully, and said any individuals would be identified and held accountable.
The Premier League Match Centre confirmed a full investigation is under way and offered support to the player and both clubs, reiterating that racism has no place in football or society and that stadiums should be welcoming and inclusive.
