Rangers appear to be set to confirm Kevin Muscat as their new Head Coach. The Ibrox club have been knocked back by Steven Gerrard and Danny Röhl, which resulted in the move for Muscat accelerated. It has been reported that a deal has been agreed to bring Muscat in as the Rangers hierarchy struggle to placate their support, who wanted Gerrard to return.

The Australian manager will likely be appointed as Russell Martin’s replacement but will not assume control until the end of the Chinese Super League season. The Shanghai Port manager has four games remaining and is eager to pick up silverware before moving to Glasgow.

It appears that Rangers are attempting to replicate the success of Celtic’s appointment of Ange Postecoglou. The present Nottingham Forest manager joined Celtic from Yokohama F Marinos in the summer of 2021 after Celtic’s protracted approach for Eddie Howe ended in the Englishman rejecting a move to Paradise. His loss was Celtic’s gain as Big Ange took Scottish football by storm with his personality shining through both off and on the pitch.

After two seasons, Ange left Celtic with five trophies out of six and departed for the Premier League with Spurs. It was a shame to see him leave as there was a feeling that he was building something remarkable at the club. Celtic managed this disappointed by bringing Brendan Rodgers back to the club, who has continued to bring success to the club.

Brendan will likely face off against Neil McCann in the Premier Sports Cup Semi Final at Hampden next month with Muscat still likely to be in China at this point. It is an opportunity for Celtic to return to the National Stadium before Christmas with a view to retaining the League Cup and sealing the first piece of silverware of the campaign.

Muscat was actually touted with a move to Celtic at one stage as Ange’s Assistant when he first took over as Celtic manager. It never transpired and the general feeling was that the ex-Rangers defender would not be welcome given his connections across the city.
