Raquel Santos blasts Benfica hierarchy in farewell, says club not always run by competent people | OneFootball

According to Glorioso 1904, Raquel Santos has left Benfica’s women’s futsal team after 10 seasons. The 28-year-old used a social media farewell to deliver strong criticism of the club’s hierarchy.

In her message, she said Benfica’s greatness comes from its people, but that it is not always run by competent figures, adding that some treated others like rubbish and as expendable. She said the club’s history and values should never be compromised.

She made clear she would not remain where she is not wanted, and said athletes should be met with respect, humanity and consideration. She noted that sport can feel inhuman, yet expressed belief that everything is meant for each of us.

Despite the rebuke, Santos thanked the physios, doctors, masseurs, nutritionists and other staff who supported her during her decade with the club.

She said she will carry with her the affection of supporters, friendships with team-mates and unforgettable memories. The trophies also come with her, viewed now as a complement, while people, experiences and bonds matter most to her.
