Sunderland face pivotal transfer calls for 2026/27, with Simon Adingra set to return and Porto the latest to eye Eliezer Mayenda.

AS Monaco confirmed on Monday they would not take up their option to buy at the end of his half-season loan. Adingra joined on deadline day, clearing the way for Sunderland to sign Nilson Angulo.

He started brightly and featured regularly, but uneven form and Monaco’s failure to reach the Champions League appear to have shaped the call. Triggering the clause would have recouped a significant part of Sunderland’s £18 million fee paid to Brighton last summer.

Adingra made 17 appearances, with three goals and two assists.

His return for pre-season gives Régis Le Bris four left wingers, with Angulo, Chemsdine Talbi and Romaine Mundle, who is expected to be fit for the start of pre-season after a hamstring injury, though his future, like Adingra’s, is uncertain.

Porto, the Primeira Liga champions, are the latest to register interest in Mayenda, though talk of a deal being close was quickly played down in Portugal. Sunderland are aware of the interest, several clubs remain in the race and the 21-year-old is considering his options.

Rennes have a strong interest and have held initial talks. Mayenda is keen on a permanent move to secure more minutes, with Brian Brobbey’s form limiting opportunities, and Sunderland are unlikely to stand in his way given the chance of a major profit in cash and SCR terms after paying just under £one million in 2023.
