Belgium international Thomas Meunier has arrived in the North East for a medical and is set to become Sunderland’s first signing of the summer window. The Black Cats will compete in the Europa League this season.
According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, the former Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund wing-back is set to sign a two-year deal at the Stadium of Light within the next 48 hours.
Meunier came through Standard Liège’s youth ranks before a two-year spell at Royal Excelsior Virton. He then joined Club Brugge, making almost 200 appearances and winning the Belgian league and cup.
He moved to Paris Saint-Germain in 2016 and became a consistent presence over four seasons, lifting three Ligue 1 titles, two Coupes de France, three Coupes de la Ligue and three Trophées des Champions. More recently he has featured for Borussia Dortmund, Türkiye club Trabzonspor and Lille.
The defender won his first Belgium cap in November 2013 in a 3-1 friendly victory over Colombia, then missed the 2014 World Cup. He represented the Red Devils at the 2018, 2022 and 2026 tournaments, making three appearances at the latter before a 2-1 quarter-final loss to Spain last week.
In total he has 83 caps and 10 international goals, his most recent in a 4-2 World Cup qualifier against Wales in October last year. He helped Belgium finish fourth at the 2018 World Cup and was selected in Marca’s World Cup all-star team.
