Sunderland close on Thomas Meunier with medical planned after two-year agreement | OneFootball

Sunderland are closing on a two-year deal for Belgium international Thomas Meunier, with signing targeted within 24 hours if there are no late complications.

The Athletic reports that the 34-year-old flew into Newcastle on Tuesday morning, with final formalities set to take place on Wearside.

Meunier is a free agent after his Lille contract expired following the 2025-26 season. His arrival would be Sunderland’s first senior signing of the summer, adding experience to Régis Le Bris’ squad and their return to European football.

The defender has represented Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund, Club Brugge, Trabzonspor and Lille, featuring in the Champions League and earning more than 60 Belgium caps.

He began further forward before establishing himself at right-back, with his attacking output still a hallmark. He won domestic honours in Belgium and France, including league titles with Club Brugge and PSG.

Trai Hume and Nordi Mukiele are established options on the right, and Hume has also operated higher up. Meunier would offer another experienced, tactically flexible choice for the Black Cats.

The move aligns with Sunderland’s recent blend of proven seniors with a youthful core, with Reinildo Mandava and Granit Xhaka influential during a demanding Premier League campaign last season.

A medical is the final significant hurdle before completion and announcement, and Sunderland hope to conclude swiftly as preparations continue for their opening pre-season friendly away to York City.
