Sunderland supporters heading to Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby at Newcastle United will be escorted from Newcastle Central Station to St James’ Park, with a main escort at 10.15am.

According to Sunderland Echo, thousands are expected for the midday kick-off, with special measures to move away fans from the station to the ground.

Planning has run for months with both clubs and regional partners, including Northumbria Police, Newcastle and Sunderland City Councils, Nexus, British Transport Police, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, and the North East Ambulance Service. Inside the station, supporters will be directed to a designated gathering area, while club coaches will arrive directly at the stadium.

Later arrivals could face delays if further escorts are needed, risking missing the start. Supporters are urged to reach Central Station before the scheduled escort time.

Public transport will be extremely busy, with Metro and rail on a standard Sunday timetable, so allow extra time and expect queues. Engineering works mean there are no direct trains from Durham or Darlington, with a limited rail replacement service operating.

Drivers should expect road closures around Central Station, St James Boulevard and Barrack Road to support the safe arrival of away fans. A significantly increased police presence will operate across both city centres and at the ground.

Authorities aim to ensure a safe occasion with minimal disruption and ask supporters to cooperate. There will be zero tolerance of disorder, with offenders facing prosecution and possible banning orders, and clubs could also take further action.
