Sunderland striker Wilson Isidor has committed his international future to Haiti in a 148-word message ahead of Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby at St James’ Park.
Addressing supporters and the Haitian community, he said he had taken time to consider the step, is proud to join the Grenadiers and wants to honour the nation, adding that he looks forward to feeling the Diaspora’s fervour.
Sunderland were beaten 1-0 by Brighton at the Stadium of Light last weekend, with former Newcastle winger Yankuba Minteh scoring the only goal.
Régis Le Bris has his squad struggling with injuries ahead of the trip. Isidor was unavailable due to injury against Brighton and staff opted against risking him, a stance that also applied to Brian Brobbey.
Several players are racing to be fit for the derby. Robin Roefs and Nordi Mukiele missed the Brighton defeat but could return, while Reinildo Mandava is expected to train again this week. Updates on other injured players were also provided.
