West Brom’s bid to stay in the Championship has been complicated by an alleged PSR breach, with the timeline for any ruling unclear as they prepare to visit Preston. According to ExpressAndStar.com, the matter could relate to interest on loans taken during the Guochuan Lai era.

James Morrison’s side sit one place and two points above the drop after Portsmouth’s surprise win at Ipswich on Tuesday night.

Three successive draws in a seven-match unbeaten run needed turning into wins to secure safety. This week’s development, an alleged breach for 2024/25, has introduced fresh doubt over how and when Albion will gain clarity on their status.

The club received a compliance report from the EFL’s club financial reporting unit, though the date is unclear. Albion maintain they have complied with regulations, which limit losses to £41.5m over a three-year rolling period, up from £39m after last year’s vote.

Albion had 14 days from receiving the report to respond. Possible mitigation includes Shilen Patel’s Bilkul takeover in February 2024 landing midway through the three-year cycle, and the club working closely with the EFL since.

A hearing must then take place within 28 days of the initial report, a window that could overlap Albion’s finale on May 2 and leave little or no scope to respond on the pitch. Any sanction, if they are found guilty, would apply the following season to the breach.

The Championship runs until the play-off final on May 23.
