Tony Mowbray is in the frame with Chris Wilder to replace Ruben Selles at Sheffield United.
Ruben Selles is set to become the first Championship managerial casualty of the season, with two names already being linked to succeed him at Bramall Lane - including Tony Mowbray.
Reports emerged early on Sunday morning from Pete O'Rourke via X have suggested that the former Reading and Hull City boss has been relieved of his duties, having lost all five of his opening five matches in charge.
The Blades replaced beloved manager Chris Wilder after last season's play-off final defeat to Sunderland, but the appointment of Selles has been nothing short of a disaster, which culminated in a 5-0 loss to Ipswich Town on Friday.
Even before reports emerged of his sacking, the Sheffield Star had revealed that the Steel City club had made an approach to bring the man they sacked mere months ago back to the club, after Friday's humiliation in Suffolk.
Now, reports from Alan Nixon via his Patreon page suggest that Wilder might face competition for the job, as former West Brom manager Tony Mowbray is also 'on standby' to receive the call.
Experienced gaffer Mowbray has been out of a job following his sacking from West Brom earlier this year, which marked his return to the dugout after being forced to step away from Birmingham City the previous year, due to health concerns.
However, the 61-year-old is healthy and ready to return to management, and he's being eyed up for a Championship role, which could come at Bramall Lane after the reported sacking of Selles on Sunday morning.
The Blades have got off to a wretched start under their new boss, having lost all of their competitive matches under his stewardship, which has reportedly seen the ownership group bring his short tenure to a close.
Now, according to Nixon, Mowbray is on the list of candidates who could potentially replace Selles at Sheffield United, as the lack of compensation and his style of football are two major factors on his side.
Despite reports from Nixon suggesting that Mowbray is one of the top candidates for the soon-to-be vacant position at Bramall Lane, reports from the Sheffield Star on Saturday suggested that the 61-year-old may face competition.
Before reports had even emerged of Selles' sacking, The Star dropped a bombshell that the Blades had already approached the man they'd sacked just months ago, Wilder, about the possibility of succeeding his successor.
However, Mowbray is said to have a big admirer in the Sheffield United management side, and a move to bring Wilder back would reportedly take a 'remarkable climb down' from the hierarchy at the Yorkshire club.
Nixon also suggested that former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl has backing to make a controversial move to the red side of the Steel City, but it's seemingly Wilder and Mowbray who are the frontrunners for the job as it stands.
With official confirmation of Selles' sacking expected to come shortly, it will be interesting to see if United go back to Wilder, or opt for a brand-new chapter under Mowbray or Rohl.
