Argentine federation to appeal to CAS over FIFA World Cup final sanctions | OneFootball

Argentina’s federation said in a statement that it will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport after FIFA issued sanctions over the post-match fracas following the World Cup final.

Spain beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time, and the melee was sparked by Lionel Scaloni’s players. FIFA handed down the punishments on 21 August.

Leandro Paredes received a 10-match ban and a €77,000 fine. Nahuel Molina was suspended for seven matches and fined the same amount. Thiago Almada and assistant coach Roberto Ayala were each banned for one match and fined €25,000.

AFA was also fined €265,000 for multiple breaches, including collective misconduct, discriminatory or racist incidents, and public order disturbances. It is awaiting formal notification and plans to file appeals with FIFA’s Appeal Committee, with CAS potentially the final recourse.

FIFA has accepted Argentina’s request for the suspensions to be served during upcoming category A friendlies and/or official matches. Spain midfielder Gavi was also given a one-match ban and a €25,000 fine and has not indicated any intention to challenge the decision.
