Sunderland have received a fresh update on Simon Adingra, with Monaco set to forgo a permanent deal after his loan. According to Nice-Matin, the club have decided against activating the purchase option.
The clause was estimated at between €5million and €10million, around £4.3million to £8.5million, though reports at the time suggested it was closer to £17million.
Adingra joined Monaco on loan from Sunderland in January, making 17 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals and providing two assists. He showed flashes of quality but his form was inconsistent.
Used mainly as a wing-back, the role tested different parts of his game. While he offered attacking threat, the report said his defensive work left something to be desired and his displays ranged from impressive to disappointing.
Monaco’s stance means Adingra is set to return to Sunderland this summer. Florent Ghisolfi and Régis Le Bris will have to decide whether to reintegrate him, move him on again or consider him for the wider Premier League group.
Internationally, he remains in the Ivory Coast set-up. He was named in their World Cup squad and came on in the 74th minute of a 2-1 defeat to Germany, though he missed last season’s AFCON.
Sunderland are now reassessing the winger’s place as they shape the squad for the new season.
