Aston Villa are one of three clubs monitoring Kim Min-jae, with Bayern Munich yet to decide whether the defender remains in their plans. Christian Falk reported that Villa, Tottenham Hotspur and AC Milan made contact during the summer, although none submitted an offer.

Kim remains tied to Bayern until June 2028, so Bayern controls the situation. Falk says Bayern will first hold talks with the South Korean international this autumn before deciding whether to extend his deal or consider a sale. Any January move looks unlikely, with those talks likely to shape the next stage.

Villa have plenty to consider. Kim brings Champions League experience, international pedigree and a Serie A title. The defender won the 2022-23 Scudetto and Serie A’s defender award before joining Bayern.

His physical game could appeal to Unai Emery if Villa want another centre-back who can defend aggressively and cover space behind a high line. Yet the financial side matters. Salary estimates place Kim around €230,769 gross per week, although those figures are unofficial. Bayern could demand a substantial fee given his deal.

Villa‘s situation makes the idea interesting, but it doesn’t automatically make the transfer necessary. The club have invested heavily, while defensive recruitment must compete with other positions.

Kim’s versatility would give Emery another experienced option across a back three or back four. He can defend large spaces, attack crosses and bring experience from Bayern, Napoli and South Korea. That profile carries value for a side chasing domestic and European targets.

However, Villa shouldn’t pursue the name simply because Tottenham and Milan are watching. A sizeable fee and salary would demand a clear role, regular minutes and a tactical reason for the expenditure. Otherwise, the club could spend heavily without solving its pressing issue.

Should Aston Villa spend big on the Bayern defender?

My view is that Villa should keep Kim on their shortlist, but only move if Bayern’s asking price and salary demands match the footballing need. The 29-year-old offers qualities Emery can use immediately, yet Villa don’t need to win a transfer race.

If Bayern make Kim available on sensible terms, Villa should explore the deal. If the package becomes excessive, Emery can use those resources elsewhere. With no concrete offer reported and Bayern set to speak with Kim first, Villa have little reason to rush.
