Augsburg enter 2026/27 under Manuel Baum after a split 2025-26, a mixed pre-season and limited but effective recruitment.
According to BuLi News, Augsburg’s 2025-26 was split in two. Sandro Wagner started with a 3-1 win over Freiburg, but only two further wins arrived by late November and a 3-0 loss to Hoffenheim ended his reign. Baum steadied the side above the drop, they lost only five times from mid-January, beat Bayern 2-1 and briefly eyed Europe before a March dip.
Pre-season began on 13 July 2026 with a 1-1 draw at Saarbrucken, Mert Kömür equalising late, then a 5-2 defeat to Bournemouth. Camp in Achenkirch yielded a 15-0 win over FC Schwaz and a 3-2 comeback against Sassuolo through Robin Fellhauer, Anton Kade and Hennes Behrens. Leeds then won 4-0 at Elland Road, a sharp reminder before facing newly promoted Schalke.
Outgoings featured Dimitrios Giannoulis to PAOK for 4.25m and Cedric Zesiger to Young Boys for 3.5m, with Elvis Rexhbecaj joining VfL Wolfsburg on a free. Elias Saad was loaned to Nashville SC. Behrens arrived for 3.5m, Rodrigo Ribeiro signed permanently from Sporting Lisbon for 5m, Michael Gregoritsch joined for 700,000 after 6 goals on loan from Brondby, plus Calvin Brackelmann and Sima Suso for squad depth.
Finn Dahmen should start behind Matsima, Schlotterbeck and Banks, with Brackelmann pushing. Fellhauer may edge Marius Wolf at right wing-back, Behrens on the left, Massengo and Rieder in midfield, Kade and Kömür behind the striker. If Kömür departs late, Rieder or Claude-Maurice could cover, with Gregoritsch favoured over Ribeiro up top.
Defensive tightening after pre-season looks key. Matching last term’s level seems plausible, with an 8th to 11th-place finish in play.
