As things stand, FC Barcelona have one of the most competent and competitive squads in Europe, with very high-quality options for all areas of the team.
However, the Catalans are still being linked with several other names from the market, as they continue to look for ways to eliminate any lingering weaknesses in their team.
In this regard, Fichajes reports that one player who has caught Barcelona’s attention for the near future is Pablo Barrios, the talented midfielder from Atletico Madrid.

At just 22 years of age, Barrios has already established himself as an important player under Diego Simeone. He has made 115 first-team appearances and recently signed a long-term contract that ties him to Atletico until 2030, a sign of the club’s full confidence in his development.
The €55 million-rated midfielder also enjoyed a standout 2024, winning a gold medal with Spain at the Paris Olympic Games and earning his debut with the senior national team. His performances have highlighted not only his technical ability but also his leadership and maturity on the field.

For Barcelona, Barrios represents the perfect mix of youth, talent, and experience. He has proven himself capable of performing at the highest level in La Liga, combining strong defensive work with an ability to progress the ball effectively. His vision, shooting, and composure under pressure make him a versatile and complete midfielder.
Moreover, his characteristics align well with Hansi Flick’s tactical philosophy, which values intensity, pressing, and intelligent ball movement. Although Barrios is not a direct attacking option, his capacity to contribute from deeper positions and support transitions could provide balance to the Barcelona midfield.
In addition, with several Barcelona midfielders facing injury concerns, Barcelona’s sporting department is keeping a close eye on profiles like Barrios, who already possess La Liga experience and a strong competitive mentality.

Convincing Atletico Madrid to part ways with one of their brightest young players will not be easy. Barrios’ recent renewal and high release clause make him a difficult target, particularly for a direct domestic rival. Any negotiations would require both sporting and financial guarantees from Barcelona.
Atletico’s current form could also play a role in the player’s long-term decisions. If the Madrid-based club fails to meet its sporting objectives, some players might start exploring new opportunities, which could open the door for Barcelona to step in.

A move for Barrios in the short term appears unlikely, but a potential transfer in the summer of 2026 could become realistic, especially if changes occur within Barcelona’s squad or wage structure.
The club’s scouting department continues to monitor his progress closely as he remains one of the most promising midfielders in Spain.
