Barcelona succumbed to their second defeat of the season on Sunday, as they were beaten 4-1 by Sevilla, days after losing to PSG in the UEFA Champions League.
It was one of the team’s worst defeats under Hansi Flick as the defence was found wanting time and again, although the Catalans were not helped by some dodgy refereeing decisions.
Speaking to the media after the game, Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsi was open in his criticism, admitting that the team had missed an opportunity to go top of the table, but also called for perspective after what he described as “a tough week” for the squad.
“We’re leaving with a rather bad feeling. I think they completely outplayed us in the first half and we didn’t come out with the intensity that this stadium demands,” admitted Cubarsi.
“We improved in the second half, but we lacked precision in front of goal and they didn’t let us off the hook.”
Cubarsi added: ‘We didn’t come out with the intensity that the match required, we came out asleep and there are no excuses, it’s our fault, we have to improve the things we were lacking.”

When asked about the team’s defensive fragility, he was clear in his assessment, pointing to the team not pressing collectively from up front.
“These chances start at the top, and we have to start pressing again like last season. We’ve relaxed, and that can’t happen. We don’t have to go overboard, but this is a turning point,” the youngster remarked.
The La Masia graduate then admitted that Barça had enough chances to take the lead but were punished for their inefficiency.
“In the second half, we had some very good chances. I think we could have even taken the lead. That’s football, sometimes they go in, and sometimes they don’t. We can’t just let ourselves go like that, that’s why we conceded four goals.”
Cubarsi ended his remarks by calling for calm and focus, as he said: “The feeling in the league had been good. I don’t think we should dramatise things in this area, but we can’t let points slip away like that.”
“We have to look to the future and improve on the mistakes we’ve made,” he concluded.
