FC Bayern will have to do without head coach Vincent Kompany in the Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain – at least for the first leg. The Belgian is suspended following his third yellow card in the quarter-final second leg against Real Madrid and will have to watch the game in Paris from the stands
This raises a key question: who will take charge on the touchline in one of the most important games of the season?
Unlike many top clubs, FC Bayern does not have a clearly defined „first“ assistant coach who automatically steps in. Instead, responsibility within the coaching team is spread across several shoulders with different areas of responsibility
Kompany himself left it open after the Real game as to who would stand in for him, saying that they would consult internally and find a solution in peace

According to information from BILD, there are currently many indications that Aaron Danks could take over the role on the touchline. The 42-year-old is part of the closest coaching staff and is primarily responsible for set pieces
Danks is regarded internally as an important voice in the coaching team and could therefore be the logical choice to deputize for Kompany during the 90 minutes
However, the Bayern coach is not completely on the sidelines: Kompany will continue to be in charge of the entire match preparation and will also dictate the tactical approach
It is only during the game itself – as well as immediately before and during the half-time break – that he will not be present in the dressing room or on the touchline. Instead, he will follow the action from the stands
The Belgian himself is relaxed: „I have every confidence in the team and the coaching team.“
Former Bayern star Stefan Effenberg, however, is much more critical of the ban. In his column, he speaks of a „considerable weakening“ for the record champions. Kompany’s influence goes far beyond tactical preparation. His calmness, his communication with the players and his charisma on the sidelines are a decisive factor
Effenberg even draws a drastic comparison: the loss of the coach weighs almost as heavily as that of a key player like Harry Kane
This makes the first leg in Paris a special challenge for FC Bayern, who will have to improvise not only in sporting terms but also in terms of organization
At the same time, it is an opportunity to demonstrate the team’s increased stability and maturity
Because one thing is clear: if Bayern can survive without their head coach, it would be another strong signal in the battle for the title.
