Borja Sainz addressed his goal celebration after Porto’s 2-0 win over Arouca at the Dragão.
The Spaniard came off the bench for the second match running to help seal the result. The player said in a post that his gesture was driven by emotion, not aimed at the stands and not intended as disrespect.
The winger had made a hand movement that some interpreted as a message to keep talking.
He has felt heavily criticised from outside the club while mourning the death of his mother.
After a difficult spell, scoring at the Dragão and feeling the crowd’s affection was exactly what he needed, and he thanked Porto fans for their support.
