Celtic have strengthened their attacking options with the loan signing of Austria international Junior Adamu (24) from Bundesliga side Freiburg, with an option to join permanently in the summer, BBC Sport have reported.
Born in Nigeria, Adamu came through the RB Salzburg academy, scoring 23 goals in 84 appearances before moving to Freiburg in 2023. While he has found the net seven times in 67 appearances in Germany, he has struggled for regular playing time this season, featuring just once as a substitute in Freiburg’s last 10 Bundesliga matches.
Celtic manager Martin O’Neill highlighted Adamu’s experience at the highest level as a key factor in the deal. “He has been involved in European competition, so we are bringing in a talented, experienced, international forward to really enhance our attacking options,” O’Neill said.
Adamu becomes Celtic’s third signing of the January window, following striker Tomas Cvancara from Borussia Mönchengladbach and Bournemouth full-back Julian Araujo.
The Austria international is eager to make an impact in Scotland, aiming for a league and Scottish Cup double. “I’m dangerous in the box and hungry for goals. That’s what the manager sees in me and I want to show that on the pitch,” Adamu said.
Celtic will hope the forward can bring a cutting edge to their attack as they push to close the gap on Premiership leaders Hearts and compete on multiple fronts this season.
