Christian Eriksen is “doing well” but will undergo “further examinations” after collapsing during Denmark’s friendly against Ukraine on Thursday evening.

The 34-year-old midfielder previously suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s UEFA Euro 2020 match against Finland five years ago, and was fitted with an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator that allowed him to continue playing professional football.

He became the first player to play in the top flight with such a device, which is designed to shock the heart back into rhythm after a cardiac arrest.

But he collapsed again in the second half of a friendly against Ukraine, prompting the match to be suspended – and later called off – with Denmark leading 2-1.

Morten Boesen, the Danish national team doctor, issued a statement shortly after the suspension was announced, confirming that the midfielder “is doing well and walked off the pitch by himself.

“As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should. He was briefly unconscious but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were quickly in contact with him.

“He will undergo further examinations at the hospital to determine what caused the incident. We are in ongoing contact with him and the doctors at the hospital, but Christian is doing well and he asked me to send his regards to all the players and tell them that he was okay.”
